Thursday, July 6 The great thing about saltwater fishing is that you never know what you may catch. While fishing in the lower Chesapeake Bay for spade fish, I caught these two tautog--one was 18" long and the other was 17" long. The 25" trout was a bonus. "Just remember, the target fish for a day is whatever is caught when other fish don't cooperate." Submitted by: Fred Sullivan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday, July 4, we left Gwynn's Island Boatel about 9:00 a.m. with our Granddaughters, Tori and Ren, and their Mom, for what turned out to be an exceptional day of fishing for two little girls who had never experienced saltwater fishing before. None of the adults fished, we just enjoyed making the girls' day a fun one. We originally went to Wolftrap Lighthouse but the water was too rough for the 6- and 7 year-olds so we came back to the "Hole In The Wall." From the first cast the girls caught croaker, bluefish, and sharks for about two hours. Ren, the youngest caught several croakers and bluefish and three sharks (each about 24" long) while Tori caught several croakers and bluefish and one shark. As can be seen by the following pictures, Tori's shark was quite large for a small girl (20 lbs., 36" long) she reeled it in by herself amid squeals of delight. The girls and the adults had a blast!! We couldn't have asked for a better day! Just look at the smiles on their faces. At the end of the day we were joined by our youngest son, his wife, and our other two Granddaughters, Kitty and Kember, and we all watched, and I add thoroughly enjoyed, the Mathew's County fireworks. Our trip home is a two-hour ride and needless to say the girls went to sleep and as an attest to the wonderful time they had they talked of fishing while they slept. Each is looking forward to another trip and so are we. Submitted by: Patty Sullivan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Friday, June 23, was one of the best days of fishing, if not the best, that we have experienced. We left the Gwynn's Island Boatel about 9:00 A.M. and headed out to my wife's favorite, secret, fishing spot in the lower bay. The tide was outgoing with a SSW wind blowing at 10 mph. There was only one other boat at our "secret" spot. Patty had landed 12 fish before I got my first bite. We fished for 4 hours and caught 15 Spadefish, 14 gray trout , 2 flounder, and 2 stripers of 24 inches each. Season on stripers went out June 15th, so they went back into the bay. Three of the spadefish weighted over 7 lbs each and the trout ranged from 24 " to 29". -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Saturday, June 24, we returned to our "secret" spot only to find about a dozen boats fishing in "THE SPOT". I knew we should have left the dock earlier. The catch for the day consisted of 3 spadefish, 1 flounder, lots of small sea bass, 2 nice trout, and the catch of the day was made by my son, Qunitin, a 25 lb black drum! I know they get a lot larger but considering he was fishing for spadefish and his tackle consisted of a Penn 7' light action rod, a Penn 104 spinning reel spooled with 14 lb. Stren with a 20 lb. leader, a #4 hook, and a small piece of clam , it was quite a battle. PLEASE REMEMBER, if someone has anchored and is fishing, DON'T anchor or fish close to them. Respect each other and don't try to fish in someone else's livewells. Fish can swim! Stay about 100 yards away. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- May 24, 2000, It was an all nighter on the Sacramento River. My brother-in-law and I were after sturgeon. We were hammered a few times but managed to land some nice ones. It was late morning before my son and I left the Boatel and arrived at Buoy 42. We only fished for a couple of hours because of impending bad weather. But, we caught a lot of croaker, some small trout, and a flounder weighing 4 lbs. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- April 22, 2000 Caught off Schwab, near the north end of Okinawa ... Not bad for a 3-year-old ! The fish were caught in her GreatGranddad's pond. Bones' sister Kitty did pretty good, too. She caught her bass on a small minnow while fishing for crappie. Kitty is a seasoned saltwater angler, and looks like a pretty good fresh water angler, too. Kitty's bass was also caught in her GreatGranddad's pond.
